My Motivation // Meine Motivation
Monday 10th Aug
I will be running the London Marathon for the World Cancer Research Fund because I want to help support research. As a scientist, I deeply understand firsthand how crucial sound and dedicated research is. Cancer is a disease that can strike anyone—even young children—and it requires tireless scientific research to defeat it. I want to stand behind the WCRF researchers who are carrying out this vital work.
My motivation is also deeply personal. I am running, among other reasons, in memory of my two grandfathers, both of whom I lost to this disease. One of my grandfathers died of bowel cancer when I was just a child, so sadly, I can barely remember him. Cancer took away my chance to ever truly get to know him.
My other grandfather survived prostate cancer but later developed pancreatic cancer, which he succumbed to when I was 18 years old. His condition deteriorated terrifyingly fast: just six months after his diagnosis, the disease took his life. I will never forget the day I went to visit him. Seeing him so frail was overwhelming. When I had to leave the room, his last words to me were, "Are you leaving?" I couldn't even answer him.
I run because I want cancer to be detected and prevented earlier, and for more cases to be cured. I don't want a family's final moments together to come to a sudden end within a year of diagnosis. I want to help enable breakthroughs in research that not only allow people to survive, but also give them the chance to truly live.
