Why World Cancer Research Fund?

Every day, around 1,100 people hear the words “you have cancer.” It’s a heartbreaking reality — and what’s even more staggering is that over 420 of these cases could have been prevented. That’s around 155,000 people every year.

World Cancer Research Fund is dedicated to changing that. Since 1982, they’ve been funding vital research, influencing health policy around the world, and helping people understand how small lifestyle changes can make a big difference in preventing cancer. Their mission — to help people live longer, healthier lives, free from the devastating effects of cancer — is something that truly resonates with me.

This cause is deeply personal. Over the past two years, I’ve lost both my best friend and my godmother to cancer. My best friend was just 21 when she passed away from melanoma, and my godmother fought breast cancer so bravely before it spread to her brain and lymph nodes. Losing them was absolutely heartbreaking and opened my eyes to how widespread and indiscriminate cancer really is.

By running the Chicago Marathon and fundraising for World Cancer Research Fund, I want to honour their memory and support the work that gives hope to so many others. While we continue to search for a cure, prevention and awareness are incredibly powerful — and the money I raise will help fund life-saving research and empower people to take steps that could one day stop cancer before it starts.

This run is for them — and for everyone whose lives have been touched by cancer.
